SCOTUS: States Can Require Voter Photo ID

Most excellent news:

WASHINGTON - States can require voters to produce photo identification, the Supreme Court ruled Monday, upholding a Republican-inspired law that Democrats say will keep some poor, older and minority voters from casting ballots.

Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and David Souter dissented.

That's no surprise. What is a surprise: Stevens and Kennedy sided with the Conservatives.

End times!

Finally, with regard to both Iraq and Afghanistan, we need more of something that is often in short supply here in our country: patience. I was struck, during our briefing at the embassy in Kabul, by a comment made by one of our U.S. aid workers, who had recently returned from the Southeast and had met with a number of former Taliban, so-called former Taliban. And one of these former Taliban said, "Americans may have all the watches, but we have all the time." I think it's a lesson that we forget at our peril. This will not be an easy undertaking. It will require patience, and it will require the continuing support of the American people.

I was struck, in my briefing with Ambassador Bremer -- his frequent reference to the American occupation in Germany. I think we've all heard Secretary Rumsfeld, Secretary Wolfowitz and others refer to the German example. There certainly are lessons to be learned from that, and in some respects we have actually exceeded the time line in place there. The banking system is further along than it was at the time in the post-World War II era in Germany. There is a central bank that's up and going, to some extent.

But it took 10 years to create a stable, sovereign government, and we still have troops in Germany, as we do in Japan, as we do in South Korea, as we do in Bosnia, as we do in Kosovo. So the idea that we can somehow bring about dramatic transformational change in either a short period of time or with a relatively limited financial commitment is contradicted by our own history. And therefore we have not only the need for patience but a sense that we are going to be involved over the long run, or we will not guarantee or create the conditions for potential success.

There are a lot of lessons that perhaps we can learn from already looking back at Iraq and Afghanistan. The overriding lesson I take away is the need for international support. And that has become almost a mantra, and people say it, and no one's quite sure what it means, but everyone keeps saying it. But to me, it is clear that just as we were reminded with the quote that I recited from Leslie Gelb that our interests are often embedded in American internationalism, I think have seen that clearly.

I'm Not Going Away

I'm not going away, I'm not going
Try so hard to break me but all your diamonds turn to sand
I'm not going away, I'm not going
Say goodbye forever, I'll wait for you in no man's land

Charlton Heston 1924 - 2008

Wiki:

Actor George Clooney joked about Heston having Alzheimer's Disease. When questioned, Clooney said Heston deserved whatever was said about him for his involvement with the NRA.[13] Heston responded by saying Clooney lacked "class," and said he felt sorry for Clooney, as Clooney had as much of a chance of developing Alzheimer's as anyone else.[14]

According to his autobiography In the Arena, Heston recognized the right of freedom of speech exercised by others. In a 1997 speech, he deplored a culture war he said was being conducted by a generation of media, educators, entertainers, and politicians against:

"...the God fearing, law-abiding, Caucasian, middle- class Protestant-or even worse, evangelical Christian, Midwestern or Southern- or even worse, rural, apparently straight-or even worse, admitted heterosexuals, gun-owning-or even worse, NRA-card-carrying, average working stiff-or even worse, male working stiff-because, not only don’t you count, you are a down-right obstacle to social progress. Your voice deserves a lower decibel level, your opinion is less enlightened, your media access is insignificant, and frankly, mister, you need to wake up, wise up, and learn a little something from your new-America and until you do, would you mind shutting up?"[15]

In an address to students at Harvard Law School entitled Winning the Cultural War, Heston expressed his disdain for political correctness, stating "If Americans believed in political correctness, we'd still be King George's boys - subjects bound to the British crown."[16] He stated "Political correctness is tyranny with manners".[17] He went on to say that white pride is just as valid as black pride or red pride or anyone else's pride.

We've lost a wonderful actor and a truly great man. Rest in peace Mr. Heston.

Expanding Democracy on Bush's Watch

U.S. President George W. Bush is welcoming two new members to NATO.

Mr. Bush hailed the transformation of the Balkans in a speech in a town square in the Croatian capital, Zagreb.

Croatians filled St. Mark's square Saturday to celebrate, standing in front of the great stone cathedral that has watched over Zagreb for centuries.

Fresh from the NATO summit that invited Croatia to join the alliance, President Bush talked about how that country has left a troubled past behind to become a free state.

"The Croatian people have overcome war and hardship to build peaceful relations with your neighbors and to build a maturing democracy in one of the most beautiful countries on the face of the earth," said Mr. Bush.

Croatia was one of three Balkan countries deemed by NATO leaders to meet the criteria for membership. Two - Croatia and Albania - are beginning the admission process immediately. The third - Macedonia - must wait until it settles a name dispute with its neighbor, Greece.

The heart of the matter:

Leaders of all three countries were on hand in Zagreb for the celebration. As they looked on, President Bush made a vow. He said, "Henceforth, should any danger threaten your people, America and the NATO alliance will stand with you. And no one will be able to take your freedom away."

He noted that Croatia, Albania and Macedonia have all deployed troops to Afghanistan, and Croatian and Albanian forces have served in Iraq. He said as countries that have experienced life under repression, they are serving as an example to others.

"There are those who actually wonder if people were better off under their old tyranny. You can tell them that freedom is the only real path to prosperity, security and peace," said the U.S. president.

That's what the opposition to the Iraq invasion don't understand. Strangely, those same people say of the US that we should remember the Franklin quote, "He who would trade liberty for some temporary security, deserves neither liberty nor security."

Why doesn't that apply to other nations? In my mind it applies to every human being on earth who desires freedom. Which would be (almost) everyone.

Welcome to NATO, Croatia and Albania. We're in this together.
